I thought it would be a good idea to have a little corner of the internet, explaining a little bit about who Wild Spelks is and what I do. Also, I don’t sleep very well and I need something to do at 2 in the morning. Well I’m Jonny Sabiston and Wild Spelks is my solo project, launched in April 2020, with the release of my debut single The Happy Places.
I’ve been a music producer and songwriter for over fifteen years, recording and mixing North East bands independently, as well as performing in various bands over the years. I’ve written short film soundtracks, recorded with some of my favourite bands and played some great gigs over the years.
The constant in my life has been that I have always found happiness and a creative outlet in writing and recording my own music. In late 2019, I was finally encouraged enough to pop a label on this music, package it up and see what the world thought. So far, the reception has been wonderful. As I speak, I’m about to release my third single Dreamer which I can’t wait for the world to hear.
My dream is to keep writing and recording my music, hopefully maintaining an upwards trajectory in terms of the friends and fans I’ll make along the way. Starting a musical project during a global pandemic has been different, I’ve made a lot of friends and fans that I haven’t met yet in the real world, hopefully that will change soon!
I’ve copied a few ‘get to know me’ questions here, for a bit of fun x
If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Somewhere in the North of Scotland would be nice, perhaps just outside of Ullapool? Have you seen Ullapool?!
What would you change about yourself if you could? I’d be less anxious, always working on it.
What is your proudest accomplishment? I’m heading towards 4 years booze free, this summer. Rad!
What is your favourite book to read? Shamefully, I’m rubbish at reading. I can read, but I just really struggle to get into it. Podcasts and audiobooks all day and night though!
How many pairs of shoes do you own? I used to work at Dr Martens in Newcastle and they are incredibly generous. I must own about 20 pairs of docs, including my custom made pair for one years service.
What would you do if you won the lottery? I’d buy that house in Ullapool and build a recording studio, come along, I don’t charge.
What’s your favourite zoo animal? I’m anti-zoo, since going vegan years ago (I know, I mentioned it) I wouldn’t consider going to a zoo, they just seem so Victorian. They’ll be a thing of the past, in the not too distant future, hopefully. Anyway, It’s Monkeys.
What’s your favourite movie? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Can’t get enough of it.
If you had a warning label, what would yours say? Easily Startled.
